Getting to know Ita, We sat down with Priceline Sister Ita Buttrose to find out her health and beauty routine

I was in my late thirties when I decided it was time for me to determine how I wanted to grow older. What sort of lifestyle would allow me to live life to the fullest?  The answer was easy really. One that combined a healthy diet with physical exercise and mental stimulation.

I know that exercise is good for brain health so I try to do some kind of exercise every day. I used to love running but these days I walk. I walk almost every day and at least for one hour five days a week. I do Pilates twice a week and I work out at home with weights once a week because I want to maintain my upper body strength.

I watch my diet but that doesn't mean I don't sometimes enjoy ice cream, chocolates and the occasional pudding - Christmas pudding is my absolute favourite, possibly weakness!

I always have breakfast. I eat fish three times a week and lots of greens, especially spinach, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. I often have corn on the cob for lunch. I opt for sweet potatoes rather than white potatoes. I do eat meat especially lamb, pork, beef and liver, but not every day.

And every now and again I cook a roast - usually a leg of lamb with gravy, baked spuds, pumpkin, onions and peas  - and love every mouthful.

When it comes to maintaining a beauty regime sleep must be a priority. I try to get seven hours sleep every night. When this isn't possible I have a nap in the afternoon to make up the shortfall. Sometimes I nap for 20 minutes, sometimes 30 and occasionally one hour. I always feel fantastic when I wake up and raring to go.

Sleep energises our brain, perks up our skin, makes our eyes brighter and puts a spring in our step.

I believe in the importance of having a beauty regime and sticking to it. I cleanse thoroughly at night and believe this is essential and very beneficial for my skin. I exfoliate my skin regularly and always moisturise my skin morning and night. I brush my eyebrows into good shape morning and night and often use a little Vaseline for the best results. I never go outside or spend time in the sun without first applying a good sunscreen to my face, neck and hands. Too much sun prematurely ages our skin. At night, the last thing I do before going to sleep is to use hand cream before turning off the lights.

Because journalism is such an unpredictable profession, I have always believed in being prepared for any eventuality. My style is classic. I opt for clothes that don't crush. I always wear clean and polished shoes (my father drummed the importance of having clean shoes into me when I was growing up). I manicure my nails once a week. I moisturise my hands daily and try to remember to use sunscreen on them when I go walking. Well-kept hands are a must-have for any woman who wants to look well-groomed.
