Look Good...Feel Better is a free community service program provided by the charitable organisation - The Cancer Patients Foundation Ltd. The program is dedicated to helping Australian women cope with the cosmetic side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Cancer treatment has a devastating effect on the thousands of women diagnosed with the disease each year. Look Good...Feel Better helps women manage these side effects through hands-on workshops run by volunteer beauty consultants. These qualified personnel offer practical advice for skin care, make-up, hats, wigs, and other headwear; helping to restore the appearance and self image of these women.

One brave woman
It was 1987 in the United States when a doctor, treating a woman for cancer, became concerned about her level of self-consciousness during her treatment. Her anxiety would become quite extreme – to the point where she would not venture outside of her hospital room. Recognising her 'appearance related' side effects, he approached the President of the Cosmetic Industry Association for help to organise a makeover for this woman.
After her makeover, the woman’s appearance was transformed. But it was the effect on her self-esteem that the doctor found most dramatic. She laughed for the first time in weeks. The doctor credited the makeover with transforming her look as well as her outlook.
Improving the outlook of Australian women
In May 1990, The Australian Cosmetic Industry launched Look Good...Feel Better holding the first workshop at Westmead Hospital in Sydney. A second workshop was introduced later that year at St Vincent’s Hospital, also in Sydney. In that first year 121 female patients attended Look Good...Feel Better workshops. Today, this valuable program is now available at over 170 locations, helping over 10,000 cancer patients.
