Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF) is dedicated to saving women's lives by eliminating cervical cancer through awareness, vaccination and screening in both Australia and developing countries. They do this through:
- Their Cervical Cancer Awareness Program for Schools (CCAPS)
- Providing the life-saving cervical cancer vaccine and treatment free for women in developing countries such as Bhutan, Nepal and Kiribati
- Developing a program to Australian indigenous populations about cervical cancer.
- Raising funds to give practical assistance to Australian women affected by cervical cancer.

The only cancer that can be prevented by a vaccine
Cervical cancer can develop when the cervix has been infected by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread by sexual contact. Therefore, its prevention is an issue for both men and women. When abnormal cells in the lining of the cervix grow uncontrollably, they form lesions which can become cancerous. While it’s common to be infected with HPV, most people will show no symptoms, so it is important for women see their doctor for regular Pap smears. Cervical Cancer is still the only cancer that can be prevented by a vaccine.
Every two minutes
Somewhere in the world, every two minutes, a woman dies from cervical cancer. Yet it is the only cancer that can be prevented by the vaccine which was developed in a world-first by Australian researchers. ACCF believes this vaccine should be made available to women everywhere.
The foundation works hard to provide screening and vaccine free for women in developing countries and for just $50, ACCF can vaccinate one girl or screen three women; for $5,000, ACCF can vaccinate every girl or screen every woman in a village.
A Real Life Challenge
The ACCF’s 'Cervical Cancer Awareness Program for Schools' (CCAPS) was launched in October 2010 and provides students with knowledge about cervical cancer and its prevention. Students are encouraged to take a further step and develop themselves as future leaders in their community, by joining ACCF’s Real life challenge, which can make a real difference through:
- Fundraising for ACCF projects in a fun supported team environment
- Participating in a current ACCF project delivering the HPV vaccine to schoolgirls in a developing country where they'll also experience local culture, undertake a trek and assist in eliminating cervical cancer globally
- Producing a documentary highlighting their experiences which can be an impressive addition to their CV.
How the Sisterhood helps
