What is dementia?

It is a broad term which describes the symptoms of a large group of illnesses represented by a progressive decline in a person’s functioning which can include loss of:

  • memory
  • intellect
  • rationality
  • social skills
  • physical functioning

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for between 50 to 70% of all cases. Dementia can happen to anybody, but it is far more common after the age of 65. The illness has also been diagnosed in people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
